Jesus once offered an amazing promise: “How much more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask Him!” Luke 12:13. Can you
imagine a life in which you experience more of God’s love, more of His peace
and power, more of His Presence in any and every circumstance? At one level,
I’m sure all of us would say to that, Sign me up! We long to experience these things in deeper
ways in our lives. It is clear from Scripture that God longs for us to
experience this as well. Which raises the obvious question: Why don’t we? Why
aren’t we experiencing the “more” that Jesus promises?
We can trot
out the usual suspects in answering that question—busyness, distractions, sin.
But if we’re honest, we realize that our struggle actually has a much deeper
root. The joy, the peace, the power that are promised us in Scripture are all
dependent upon our experiencing the
Holy Spirit. And quite honestly, we’re not sure what to do with the Holy
Spirit.
We know
He’s important. He’s talked about all the time throughout the Bible. We know He
lives in every person who has placed their trust in Christ. All those things
are fairly well settled in our minds. What we struggle to understand is how we experience Him? What does it look like
to lean out the window and experience the Spirit more fully?
